Aaron Donald's Rams return produced identical numbers to his final pre-retirement game

The defensive tackle's first NFL appearance in nearly three years matched his stat line from his last game before stepping away.

Aaron Donald played his first NFL game in almost three years when he suited up for the Los Angeles Rams against the New York Giants. He had missed the Rams' Week 1 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Donald had retired after the Rams' Wild Card round loss to the Detroit Lions in January 2024, then came out of retirement to rejoin the club. His return came 31 months after his last snap of football.

Remarkably, Donald's statistical output in his comeback game was identical to what he recorded in that playoff loss to Detroit. That earlier game had been a quiet one for the three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year, coming after a strong season in which he recorded 53 tackles.

While the numbers matched, the circumstances differed greatly. The Lions game was a postseason matchup, while the Giants game was a regular-season contest, and Donald was working back from a long layoff.

Donald now lines up alongside Myles Garrett, with the two combining for five Defensive Player of the Year awards.
