Former United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel says Bayern Munich belongs to a short list of clubs capable of winning this season's Champions League. He named Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Barcelona as the other four contenders for the trophy.
Speaking to Jackpot City Casino, Friedel cautioned that the season is young and that injuries or January signings could alter the picture. He added that Manchester City could become a sixth candidate if the team finds top form, but said he would be surprised if the winner came from outside his group of five.
Friedel pointed to Bayern's attacking strength under manager Vincent Kompany, including Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. He also noted the development of younger players such as Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof as added depth for the German champions.
Bayern opened their Champions League league-phase campaign with a match against Bodo/Glimt in Munich on September 10, with Musiala scoring the team's first goal. The club won a domestic double last season.
