Awujo Highlights Spanish Bond as Man United Women Turn to League Cup

Simi Awujo says her Spanish has helped summer signing Andrea Medina settle in as Manchester United Women prepare to face Sheffield United in the League Cup.

Manchester United Women head into a League Cup fixture against Sheffield United looking to build on an improved performance after a difficult start to the season. The side lost to London City and fell 0-5 to Chelsea before earning a point against Arsenal on Saturday.

Canada international Simi Awujo, who scored her first league goal in the London City match, spoke to the club's website ahead of the cup tie. She grew up learning Spanish in Georgia and said the language has helped her connect with new teammates.

"Medi's (Andrea Medina) quite out there. I think it seemed quite easy for her to just mesh with everyone because she's just a good personality – lots of fun," Awujo said, adding that she considers herself proficient rather than fully fluent in Spanish. She noted she can now hold conversations in the language with Medina and Rebeca Bernal.

Awujo also discussed the team's trophy ambitions. United reached the League Cup final last season, where they lost to Chelsea, and she said the squad remains determined to win silverware, with cup and league competitions the current focus before the FA Cup begins.

The Sheffield United match will also fall on Awujo's birthday.
