Welsh FA Chief Disputes Reading of Infantino Reform Letter

FAW chief executive Noel Mooney says the Fifa president's letter addresses strategic projects, not sweeping reform of the governing body itself.

Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney has pushed back on reports that Fifa is preparing major reforms. Fifa president Gianni Infantino outlined a proposed external review of the governing body's operations in a letter to council members and national associations.

Mooney, however, said the letter did not match the headlines. In his reading, the document covered how strategic projects and initiatives were consulted on and decided, rather than reform of Fifa itself.

Infantino has faced mounting criticism over the scrapped Fifa Forward Enterprise plan, which would have sold stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investors. Wales was among the first national associations to withdraw support for his continued leadership.

Infantino is set to run for a fourth term as president in March 2027, with rivals having until 18 November to put forward an alternative candidate. Mooney confirmed the FAW will not endorse him.

Speaking on the BBC Radio Wales Phone In, Mooney argued the World Cup does not need private equity given Fifa's large reserves, and urged the governing body to distribute more money to member associations so they can invest in facilities.
