Britain Drawn Against Germany in Davis Cup Quarter-Finals

Great Britain's reward for returning to the Davis Cup Finals is a quarter-final against Germany, headlined by Alexander Zverev. The eight-team event runs from November 24 to 29 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, and a British win would set up a semi-final against either Spain or Austria.

Britain clinched their spot by beating Ecuador 4-0 at London's Copper Box over the weekend. It marks the team's first appearance at the season-ending event since 2023, when Serbia, led by Novak Djokovic, knocked them out in their opening tie. Leon Smith's squad last lifted the trophy in 2015.

Germany arrive with danger beyond Zverev, who went directly from his US Open triumph, his second major of the year, to Halle, where he helped beat Croatia. The roster also features US Open doubles finalists Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, though Zverev stands as the nation's sole singles player ranked inside the top 50.

Smith will be missing Jack Draper, the former world number four, who ended his season owing to a persistent arm issue. There is hope that Cameron Norrie, a late scratch against Ecuador with a minor injury, and Arthur Fery will both be fit. Fery and debutant Toby Samuel delivered singles wins in that tie before the doubles duo of Henry Patten and Neal Skupski sealed the result.

Elsewhere in the draw, hosts Italy, three-time defending champions despite playing last year without world number one Jannik Sinner, face South Korea, the first Asian side to reach this stage. Czechia meet Canada in the remaining quarter-final. Spain advanced past Chile without Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev has voiced criticism of the single-venue format, while Smith noted the packed crowds in Prague and Quebec, saying, "That example of what happened in Prague, and actually in Quebec as well, 10,500 people, I think it's really, really important to have that, because you won't get that in a 6,000-seater in Bologna."
