Thunder Face Oct. 19 Deadline to Extend Guard Cason Wallace

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension, but no deal has been reached yet. If the two sides don't agree before the Oct. 19 deadline, the 22-year-old would become a restricted free agent next summer.

Wallace's situation comes after a busy offseason for the Thunder. General manager Sam Presti traded Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, drafted Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz and Otega Oweh, and re-signed Isaiah Hartenstein and Kenrich Williams.

Recent contracts for comparable young guards provide a framework. Ayo Dosunmu signed for five years and $112 million ($22.4 million per year), Dyson Daniels got four years and $100 million ($25 million per year) from Atlanta, and Christian Braun landed five years and $125 million ($25 million per year) from Denver. Detroit signed Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million extension on Sept. 20.

Wallace is expected to take on a larger role this season as the team's primary point-of-attack defender and secondary ball handler. The original analysis projects an extension with an average annual value between $26 million and $30 million over four or five years.
