Thunder Face Oct. 19 Deadline on Cason Wallace Rookie Extension

Cason Wallace is eligible for a rookie-scale extension, and recent deals for guards like Dyson Daniels and Ausar Thompson offer clues on what OKC might pay.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension, but no deal has been reached yet. If the sides cannot agree before the Oct. 19 deadline, the 22-year-old would become a restricted free agent next summer.

The Thunder have been active this offseason, trading Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins while drafting Aday Mara, Bennett Stirtz and Otega Oweh. The club also re-signed Isaiah Hartenstein and Kenrich Williams. General manager Sam Presti said the Dort trade positioned the team financially to maintain a roster of its caliber.

Recent extensions around the NBA provide a framework. Dyson Daniels signed a four-year, $100 million deal with Atlanta last October after an All-Defensive first-team season, while Denver's Christian Braun received five years and $125 million. Detroit signed Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million extension on Sept. 20.

Comparable deals for guards include Ayo Dosunmu's five-year, $112 million contract with a player option and Peyton Watson's four-year, $88 million agreement with Cleveland. The Oklahoman's analysis projects a Wallace extension in the range of $26-30 million per year over four or five seasons.

Wallace is expected to take on a full-time starting role this season, serving as the team's primary point-of-attack defender and secondary ball handler.
