Freiburg's Treu eyes Germany debut under Klopp after first camp impressions

Philipp Treu praised new Germany boss Jürgen Klopp and could start at right-back against the Netherlands on Thursday.

SC Freiburg defender Philipp Treu says his first days with the Germany national team under new head coach Jürgen Klopp have left a strong impression. Speaking to Bild, the 25-year-old right-back described Klopp's welcoming personality and commanding presence.

Treu told the newspaper that any initial nerves around Klopp quickly faded because of the coach's relaxed approach, adding that he would run through fire for him. He also admitted surprise at how tall Klopp is in person.

Klopp has decided to move Joshua Kimmich from right-back into midfield, opening a spot at Treu's preferred position. That gives the Freiburg player a genuine chance to feature when Germany face the Netherlands on Thursday in UEFA Nations League play.

Treu said he intends to show his abilities in training first and would be thrilled to earn a debut, promising to give everything and lead from the front if he takes the field.

His main rival for the right-back role in the 24-man squad is Josha Vagnoman of VfB Stuttgart. Germany's Nations League campaign continues across four upcoming fixtures, beginning with the next two matches.
