Chelsea Academy Defender Tayo Subuloye Pushing Toward First Team

The 18-year-old centre-back, captain of Chelsea's Under-21s, has trained with Xabi Alonso's senior squad and is under contract until 2030.

Tayo Subuloye, an 18-year-old centre-back from Chelsea's Cobham academy, is closing in on the club's senior squad. He trained with Xabi Alonso's group ahead of a 3-0 loss to Brentford and took part extensively in the club's pre-season trip to Australia and Asia, logging 179 minutes on the field.

Those appearances included a match in front of 80,000 spectators against Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney and a full 90 minutes in Malaysia against Johor Darul Ta'zim, a match that finished 3-3. Standing 6ft 5in, Subuloye skippered Chelsea's Under-18s to southern and national championships and now leads the Under-21s, the side that also claimed a title. He wore the armband for the senior academy age group starting in the 2026-27 campaign.

Raised in Sussex, he played youth football for non-league Eastbourne Borough and drew attention from Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham academies before joining Brighton at Under-10 level. Chelsea returned with interest when he was an Under-12 and he made the move. Originally a midfielder, he was reshaped into a defender at Chelsea, and he has since covered multiple positions along the back line. An England youth international, he also qualifies for Nigeria through his parentage.

Off the pitch, academy staff have noted his academic achievement, including an A* in business studies. Speaking to the club recently, he described the first-team involvement as good exposure and said that is where he ultimately wants to be. His deal runs until 2030, and he is targeting a competitive senior debut after fellow graduates Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Reggie Walsh also featured prominently in pre-season. A loan spell this season has been raised as a possible route into the side, as it was for Colwill, Chalobah and Tomori.
