Fans React Sharply to ESPN Pairing Stephen A. Smith With Pat McAfee

Viewers criticized the network for placing two of its loudest personalities together on Monday Night Countdown before Giants-Rams.

ESPN brought Stephen A. Smith onto Monday Night Countdown alongside Pat McAfee ahead of the New York Giants-Los Angeles Rams matchup, and the move drew immediate criticism from viewers. Many took to social media to say the pairing was overwhelming, with one writing that muting the television wasn't enough and another calling the show best viewed on silent.

The criticism directed at McAfee was not new. He joined the program as a full-time analyst for 2026 after ESPN announced in August that he and Jason McCourty would work with Scott Van Pelt, Jason Kelce, and Marcus Spears. His Week 1 appearance had already prompted pushback from fans who felt he was appearing on too many of the network's major football broadcasts.

Both men remain central to ESPN's programming plans. McAfee hosts a daily show, appears weekly on College GameDay, and now works Monday nights, while Smith fronts First Take and has expanded into radio and podcasting. Smith had noted a week earlier that McAfee enjoys a degree of independence he does not, since McAfee owns his show and licenses it to ESPN, whereas the network owns First Take.

For some viewers, the question was less about each man's individual drawing power and more about whether combining them turned star wattage into excess noise.
