Juventus hit with 10,000-euro fine over fan disruption of Mazzola tribute

Serie A's sporting judge spared Juventus a stadium section closure after supporters interrupted a minute's silence for Inter Milan great Sandro Mazzola.

Juventus has been fined 10,000 euros (about $11,500) after a group of the club's supporters disrupted a minute's silence honoring former Italy and Inter Milan star Sandro Mazzola. The decision was announced Tuesday by the Italian league's sporting judge.

The club had faced the possibility of having a section of its stadium closed for its next match. However, the judge reduced the penalty, citing Juventus's swift and formal condemnation of the behavior and noting that the rest of the crowd in the stadium made clear they did not support it.

Serie A held tributes to Mazzola at all of its matches over the weekend following his death on Friday at the age of 83. Mazzola is widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest players.

The disruption occurred in Turin before Sunday's match against Atalanta, when a portion of Juventus fans turned away from the field and sang about their own club's legends. Inter Milan and Juventus are longtime rivals. Other supporters at the stadium, both home and away, responded with applause that drowned out the chanting.

Juventus released a statement shortly after the final whistle criticizing the conduct of those fans.
