Kentucky State's Aminata Seck Detained by ICE, Lawyer Says Knee Injury Untreated

A lawyer for the Senegal-born guard says she has been moved among four facilities since Aug. 7 and has only been given ibuprofen for a torn ACL.

A Kentucky State University women's basketball player has been in federal immigration custody since early August, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The newspaper reported that Aminata Seck, 26, was taken into custody by ICE agents on Aug. 7 at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport while going through a security checkpoint. She was traveling to New York with her team at the time.

Her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, told the outlet she first heard from Seck by phone on Sept. 16. Since the arrest, Seck has reportedly been transferred among four detention facilities located in Clay County, Chicago, Clark County and Grayson County.

Reynolds said Seck is suffering from a torn ACL and severe discomfort, and claimed in an Instagram post that her client's care has been inconsistent and limited to ibuprofen. In a separate post, Reynolds suggested a student visa application deadline may have lapsed because Seck was recovering from back surgery at the time. "She needs surgery. She needs medical attention," Reynolds said.

The attorney also credited head coach Amani Williams with standing by Seck throughout the process, comparing her support to that of a parent. Reynolds praised behind-the-scenes advocates who work to keep people safe.

A university spokesperson told the Louisville Courier Journal that the school had nothing to share "out of respect for the privacy of those involved."
