The rivalry traces back to the late 19th century, when both clubs grew out of the heavy industry along east London's docklands. At that time they sat far closer together than today: Millwall occupied the Isle of Dogs, while Thames Ironworks, the outfit that evolved into West Ham, was based near Canning Town.
Both clubs were originally located north of the Thames and only slightly more than two miles separated them. That changed in 1910, when Millwall moved south of the river to New Cross.
