Southern's head coach said he would cut players if he could, citing repeated special-teams breakdowns that marred the Jaguars' high-scoring victory.
Southern University beat Louisiana Christian 50-31 on Saturday, but head coach Marshall Faulk made clear afterward that the performance left him angry. Speaking in comments relayed by Kevin Batiste of WAFB 9, Faulk said he would remove players from the roster if the college game allowed it.
Faulk's frustration centered on special teams. The Jaguars were flagged on the opening kickoff, missed a field goal, missed an extra point, mishandled another extra point, and were caught off guard by a surprise onside kick.
"If this was a league where I could cut and fire players, I would," Faulk said, adding that the team practices the situation daily and that opponents should be expected to attack Southern the same way again.
The offense had a strong day despite the coach's criticism. Trey Holly ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, while Mike Franklin added 130 yards on 15 attempts. Quarterback Christian Johnson threw for 170 yards and four touchdowns on 16-of-22 passing and rushed for another score.
Southern, in Faulk's first season, now turns to rival Jackson State in the Boombox Classic. The Jaguars have one early-season loss, to Alabama State.
