Dhoni's Influence Central as Zaheer Khan Named CSK Head Coach

Chennai Super Kings say Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the cricket committee settled on the former India fast bowler to succeed Stephen Fleming.

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach, the franchise announced. The 47-year-old takes over from Stephen Fleming, who departed the role after a period in which the team failed to reach the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said Dhoni played a central part in the choice. "Dhoni obviously plays a key role in our decision-making process," Viswanathan said, adding that the veteran, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and other members of the cricket committee concluded Zaheer was the right candidate. Other names, including Hemang Badani, had been considered in the search.

Viswanathan pointed to Zaheer's pedigree as a bowler and his record of mentoring young fast bowlers. The franchise has struggled with its pace bowling, particularly in the closing overs, and Zaheer's skill with reverse swing was seen as a strong asset.

Zaheer called it an honor to join one of the most successful teams in IPL history and said he had enjoyed facing CSK as a player. He previously turned out for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils in the league.

The appointment reunites Zaheer with Dhoni, his captain during India's 2011 World Cup win, in which Zaheer was the joint-leading wicket-taker with 21.
