Five-Star Shortstop Kate McCartney Commits to Oklahoma Softball

The 2028 prospect from Placerville, California, announced her verbal commitment to Patty Gasso's Sooners on Monday.

Kate McCartney, a five-star shortstop in the 2028 class, announced her commitment to Oklahoma on Monday through her social media accounts. McCartney is a right-handed hitter from Placerville, California, where she attends Ponderosa High School and plays travel ball with the Lady Magic.

Softball America rates McCartney the No. 6 overall prospect in the 2028 class, and she is regarded as a consensus top-10 recruit across ranking services. In her announcement post, she thanked her family, coaches and teammates, as well as the Oklahoma staff of Patty Gasso, Coach JT, Coach Rocha and Coach Steele.

McCartney's decision came the same day the Sooners also picked up a commitment from four-star infielder Gia Ryan. The two prospects reportedly visited Norman together in the first week of September.

Oklahoma's 2028 class now includes the top pitcher in the cycle, Sophia Schlader, along with in-state four-star Braylyn Saenz, ranked No. 41 in the class. Softball America currently ranks the Sooners' 2028 recruiting group No. 1 nationally.
