Love's Dash-Motion Read Sets Up Packers' Overtime Winner vs. Jets

Jordan Love's pre-snap recognition against New York's alignment produced a 14-yard completion that teed up Trey Smack's game-winning field goal in overtime.

The Green Bay Packers beat the New York Jets in Week 2 at MetLife Stadium, and the decisive sequence came out of their increasingly familiar Dash motion. Through two weeks, Green Bay had used the motion 10 times, running on eight of those snaps for an average of 6.5 yards behind a consistent power blocking concept.

On the final offensive play, the Packers lined up in 12 personnel in a fully balanced formation, trailing nothing but field position in overtime. With 5:47 left and a first down at the Jets' 22, a field goal would win it, but Green Bay wanted to shorten the attempt for kicker Trey Smack, who had been perfect to that point.

Tight end Mark Redman went in Dash motion before the snap, and Matthew Golden ran a bubble route to the left. Rather than handing off or throwing the bubble, Jordan Love lofted a pass downfield and outside to Golden, taking advantage of a cornerback shaded inside and a safety positioned on the hash.

The Jets cornerback blitzed off the edge on the play, leaving no defender in position to contest the throw. The completion went for 14 yards, and Smack connected on the ensuing 26-yard field goal to win the game.

Per SumerSports data cited in the original analysis, the Jets blitzed on 31.25% of their defensive snaps, with this appearing to be their only cornerback blitz of the game.
