Patriots Defense Dominates in 20-3 Win Over Steelers, First Victory of Season

New England's defense outscored Pittsburgh's offense as the Patriots picked up their first win of the year behind young pass rushers and a strong day on the ground.

The New England Patriots earned their first victory of the season on Sunday, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 at home. The defense carried the day, scoring more points than Pittsburgh's offense and holding quarterback Aaron Rodgers to minus-0.416 expected points added per play, which ranked 31st in the league for the week.

Quarterback Drake Maye went 14-of-22 for 208 yards with one interception while facing pressure on more than half of his dropbacks. Despite the tough conditions and a third-quarter interception, he avoided unnecessary risk and connected on some downfield throws, including a 63-yard completion to Romeo Doubs.

The running back group combined for 119 yards on 24 carries. TreVeyon Henderson highlighted the day with a 39-yard touchdown in his season debut, while Rhamondre Stevenson, who lost a fumble in the first quarter, was the only back in the group to post a positive EPA per carry.

Young defenders stepped up along the line. Elijah Ponder recorded a sack and returned a fumble for a touchdown, while Gabe Jacas intercepted a pass and pressured Rodgers several times. Christian Barmore and Joshua Farmer also recorded sacks, with Barmore forcing the fumble Ponder recovered for the score.

Injuries were a concern for New England. Guard Mike Onwenu left with a reported ankle fracture, tight end Eli Raridon exited with a thigh injury, and defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones departed with a shoulder injury.
