Tigers broadcast crew zings Jason Benetti with 'geek' camera cut

Detroit announcer Jason Benetti's Austro-Turkish War trivia bit during Monday's win over Washington was answered by a perfectly timed camera cut from his own crew.

Detroit Tigers play-by-play voice Jason Benetti is known for mixing fun facts and humor into his broadcasts, often setting up his booth partner for a follow-up line. During Monday's game against the Washington Nationals, the setup landed on him instead.

Discussing Riley Greene's season, Benetti noted that Greene's OPS stood at 1.663 in games where Detroit wore its City Connect uniforms. He then joked that when a player's OPS in any category matches the year the Austro-Turkish War began, things are going well.

The Tigers' production crew responded with a camera cut to the outfield wall showing only the word 'geek' from a SeatGeek advertisement. Benetti laughed, thanked a broadcast team member named Andrew, and called it the cut of the year.

There was plenty for Detroit to smile about beyond the bit. The Tigers built an early lead on the Nationals and led 9-0 through five innings before closing out a 9-2 victory after Washington added two late runs.

Greene went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game, which dropped his OPS in the City Connect uniforms and closed the door on a repeat of the Austro-Turkish War reference.
