Lancashire Facing Lowest-Ever County Championship Finish After Winless Run

With one round of matches left in the 2026 season, Lancashire sit seventh in Division Two and could end the year bottom of English cricket's second tier for the first time in their history.

Lancashire enter the final round of the 2026 County Championship with the prospect of their worst finish in 136 years of competing in the competition. They sit seventh in Division Two, nine points above bottom-placed Gloucestershire, and host champions Durham this week needing a result to avoid ending the season in last place.

The decline follows a sharp midseason collapse. After taking two wins and a draw from their opening three matches, with captain James Anderson claiming 21 wickets in that span, injuries to opener Luke Wells and bowler Ajeet Singh Dale in April proved season-ending. Lancashire then lost eight of their next 10 matches, with the other two drawn because of rain.

Batting has been the main problem. The side has managed just one batting bonus point across the last nine matches, with three Championship centuries all season and repeated collapses, including losing all 10 wickets in a session against Kent to be bowled out for 161. The bowling has fared better — no team has collected more bowling points, and Anderson and George Balderson are the only Division Two pair in the same side to reach 50 wickets each.

Off-field change is underway. Director of cricket performance Mark Chilton departed on Monday, chief executive Daniel Gidney is stepping down with Richard Kenyon arriving from Nottinghamshire, and Clive Lloyd has become club president with former captain and coach Mike Watkinson joining the board.

Head coach Steven Croft, who took over on an interim basis in 2025 after Dale Benkenstein's mid-season exit and was later made permanent, faces a rebuilding task after a campaign that followed relegation two years ago.
