Minnesota edged Michigan 20-14 to end a home Little Brown Jug drought dating to 1977, while Alabama rolled past Mississippi State 56-23 in Week 5.
The fifth week of the 2026 college football season arrived Saturday, Oct. 3, with a schedule stacked with conference matchups. The results that shaped the day: Minnesota outlasted Michigan 20-14 to claim the Little Brown Jug, Alabama overwhelmed Mississippi State 56-23 in Starkville, Ohio State handled Iowa, and Missouri drubbed Florida.
Minnesota spent the first half chasing after Michigan's Nathaniel Staehling intercepted Drake Lindsey and raced 79 yards for a score that helped put the Wolverines up 14-7. The Gophers worked their way back, and Lindsey found Darius Taylor from three yards out inside the final 14 minutes. From there, the Minnesota defense closed out the 20-14 final.
Minnesota's defense was the difference. Michigan mustered just 11 first downs and 180 yards of total offense, surrendered three sacks and seven tackles for loss, and quarterback Bryce Underwood finished 10 of 21 passing for 101 yards with two interceptions. There was little sign the Wolverines could revive things through the air.
The trophy added historical weight: Minnesota had not celebrated a Little Brown Jug victory on its own field since 1977, a gap of nearly five decades.
Michigan's road from here is complicated by an offense that does not appear built to beat Indiana or hold up at Oregon or Ohio State. Wins against Rutgers and Michigan State look achievable, but if Penn State proves out of reach, simply reaching a sixth victory could become difficult.
Minnesota's schedule does not soften. The Gophers face a dangerous-looking trip to Purdue next, then come Iowa, a visit to Indiana, UCLA, a road test at Penn State, Northwestern and a game at Wisconsin. Every one of those matchups looms as a struggle.
At Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field, Alabama sprinted to a 14-0 lead and kept scoring in even increments, finishing with exactly 14 points in every quarter. Kamario Taylor's two touchdown passes before halftime kept Mississippi State in it for a stretch, but the Crimson Tide countered each time the Bulldogs made a move.
Keelon Russell directed the Alabama offense with 285 passing yards and three touchdowns, Trae'shawn Brown added 66 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and wide receiver Rico Smith scored in the second half. Taylor passed for 258 yards and three touchdowns for Mississippi State but was intercepted twice, and his running game found no room — Alabama's defensive front limited the Bulldogs to 0.6 yards per carry.
The performance strengthens Alabama's position in the national championship conversation, with a meeting against Georgia up next. Mississippi State arrived with wins over Minnesota and South Carolina already on its record, so one one-sided afternoon does not derail the season; the Bulldogs get an open date before a trip to LSU.
