Week 4 of the college football season came to a close Saturday, headlined by No. 1 Texas outlasting No. 13 Tennessee 20-17 in Knoxville. The Longhorns were playing at Neyland Stadium for the first time. The showdown was one of six games pairing ranked teams on the Saturday card. All told, the week produced 30 results involving ranked teams or other notable matchups, 28 of them on Saturday.
In Gainesville, No. 22 Florida handed No. 6 Ole Miss a 52-28 defeat. The Gators followed last week's emotional win over LSU by overwhelming Mississippi's Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels.
No. 17 Iowa needed a touchdown in the closing seconds to beat No. 18 Michigan 20-19, the tightest result between ranked teams all week. No. 16 Oregon defeated No. 12 USC 41-27 despite losing quarterback Dante Moore to injury.
The remaining marquee pairings were more one-sided. No. 2 Georgia overpowered No. 24 Oklahoma 41-13 at home. No. 11 LSU also earned its first conference victory of the season, beating No. 20 Texas A&M 35-6. LSU's 29-point margin was the biggest of any ranked-versus-ranked game in Week 4.
Most of the rest of the top 25 avoided upset bids. No. 3 Notre Dame beat Purdue 49-10, No. 4 Indiana held off Northwestern 29-23 on Friday, No. 5 Miami rolled past Central Michigan 52-3, No. 7 Ohio State defeated Illinois 42-19 and No. 8 Alabama beat South Carolina 49-18. Seven of those eight winners prevailed by double digits, with Indiana's six-point margin the narrowest.
Unranked teams knocked off four ranked opponents, with every one of those games decided by seven points or fewer. Wisconsin edged No. 14 Penn State 24-20, Wake Forest beat No. 19 Louisville 30-27, Mississippi State outlasted No. 21 Missouri 31-24 and Minnesota defeated No. 23 Washington 27-24.

Clemson opened the weekend on Friday with a 24-10 win over California.
By the end of Saturday, ten ranked teams had lost: six against ranked opponents and four against unranked ones. No. 6 Ole Miss was the only member of the top eight to go down, while Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 all came away with wins.
