Corbin Burnes' Return Gives Diamondbacks Hope for 2027

Arizona's $210M starter is back from Tommy John surgery and could anchor a stronger rotation next season after a disappointing 2026.

The Arizona Diamondbacks remain mathematically alive in the postseason race, but their path is narrow. Reaching the playoffs would require a significant late collapse by teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, or Chicago Cubs, and missing out would make 2026 a disappointing year despite strong performances from Corbin Carroll, Nolan Arenado, and others.

One reason for optimism heading into 2027 is right-hander Corbin Burnes, who signed a $210 million deal with the club. Burnes has been sidelined for well over a season after Tommy John surgery but returned to the mound in September. He has posted a 7.84 ERA over three starts, numbers largely attributable to rust in his first outings back from the procedure.

The Athletic's Grant Brisbee pointed to Burnes as a reason to believe in Arizona next year, noting that he can shake off the rust now and in the offseason before returning to a team that badly needs him. His comeback carries added weight because veterans Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly have regressed significantly this season.

Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks could feature a rotation fronted by Burnes and Eduardo Rodriguez, with Michael Soroko and Brandon Pfaadt also in the mix. If Burnes returns to form, Arizona believes he could help fuel a deeper postseason run in 2027 than the one it is chasing this year.
