Rams Expect Puka Nacua Back Against Eagles Despite Doctor's Injury Warning

The short version
- Puka Nacua will carry no injury designation when the Rams face the Eagles
- The wide receiver missed games against the Giants and Broncos after a hip issue from the 49ers opener
- Sports doctor Jesse Morse warns of a moderately increased reinjury risk involving Nacua's groin and hip
- Coach Sean McVay says snap counts for Nacua remain undecided
- Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett are already out for the Los Angeles defense
The wide receiver will carry no injury designation in Week 4 after missing two games, though sports doctor Jesse Morse sees a moderately increased risk of reinjury.
The Los Angeles Rams are in line to have Puka Nacua available again when they meet the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Addressing reporters after Thursday's practice, head coach Sean McVay said the wide receiver will carry no injury designation into the contest, a clear sign of progress after his recent layoff. The staff has yet to settle, however, on how many snaps he should take in Philadelphia.
The return ends a two-game layoff for the All-Pro pass catcher. Nacua sensed something amiss in his hip after the season-opening matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, and the problem sidelined him for the subsequent contests against the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos. Sunday will bring his first game action since that opener.
McVay painted an encouraging picture of the receiver's recent work. "Physically he's getting in and out of his breaks, looks strong, looks sturdy, looks explosive," he told reporters at his press conference. Conditioning, rather than the hip, is what the coach framed as the remaining question: "I think it'll really just be a feel for the overall conditioning. Hoping the magic of the jersey on Sundays, he's feeling real good there."
A note of caution accompanied the good news for Los Angeles. Sports doctor Jesse Morse, replying on social media to McVay's comments about the receiver's status for the Philadelphia game, wrote that Nacua will be "limited in Week 4 as well as at moderately increased risk for reinjury with his groin and hip injuries." Morse added that the receiver will be "on the field, but likely far from 100%."
The warning highlights the gap between practice and game conditions. However sharp Nacua has looked in workouts, regular-season action unfolds at a faster and less predictable pace, and one awkward movement can undo weeks of rehabilitation. That danger does not disappear if Los Angeles limits the 25-year-old to a reduced workload, the very scenario the team is debating.
Nacua's importance to the Los Angeles offense gives the decision extra weight, since he ranks among the unit's most important weapons. There are alternatives, though: quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Davante Adams are both players capable of swinging a game on their own, which gives the club some cover if it chooses to handle Nacua with care.
Concerns about depth sharpen the debate. Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett are already unavailable on the other side of the ball, leaving the defense shorthanded, and the organization can hardly afford a similar shortage among its offensive personnel. The team therefore faces a choice that stretches well beyond this weekend and takes in the season as a whole.
The Rams travel to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Eagles on Sunday, October 4, with kickoff set for 1:00 PM EDT. The game will be broadcast on FOX.
