Harvard edged Colgate 20-17 on Saturday night, winning on the game's final play when a Hail Mary pass turned into a lateral and a race to the end zone. The walk-off touchdown improved the Crimson to 3-0, stunned Colgate and head coach Curt Fitzpatrick, and produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the college football season.
Harvard's hopes rested on one play, with the offense needing a touchdown to take the game. Quarterback Charlie Smith handled the final snap and sent a deep throw toward the end zone with the outcome hanging on it.
Tight end Teigan Pelletier came down with the ball, but Colgate defenders closed on him at once and left him no clear path to the end zone. Rather than let the play die, Pelletier pitched the ball to wide receiver Nate Bailey, extending Harvard's last-gasp attempt.
Bailey gathered in the lateral, broke toward the left side of the field and outran the pursuit on his way into the end zone. The touchdown flipped a game Colgate had led until that snap, settled the final score at 20-17 and kept Harvard's record spotless through three games.
Clips spread across social media within minutes of the final snap, among them a post from Matt Zenitz noting the similarity to the old Moss play. The sequence closely resembled a famous 2003 finish featuring Randy Moss, when the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver was part of a similar Hail Mary with laterals against the Denver Broncos, more than two decades ago.
The winning score capped an outstanding night for Bailey, a freshman wide receiver. He totaled 16 catches for 197 yards against Colgate, and the touchdown on the game's last snap completed the performance.
After the game, Bailey pointed to the competition inside Harvard's own roster as the foundation for his readiness. "When we're going against each other every day, I try to sharpen the tools I have and the gifts I have so on game day it shows. Nobody wants it more than this group, so we all do it together really well," Bailey said.
The stakes gave the finish added meaning. Harvard's victory came against a ranked opponent and preserved the team's unbeaten start, while Colgate and Fitzpatrick absorbed a three-point defeat that turned on the game's final snap.
The ending also delivered the kind of victory that can define a season. Harvard is still perfect through three games, and the lateral-filled Hail Mary stands as a play likely to rank among the signature moments of the Crimson's year as the schedule moves forward.
