Undefeated UCLA Visits Maryland for Big Ten Football Showdown

An unbeaten UCLA squad travels east this weekend for its first conference game away from home. The Bruins, now 3-0, take on Maryland on Saturday with a chance to move to 2-0 within the Big Ten. Maryland, sitting at 2-1, opens its league schedule after falling at home a week ago.

UCLA survived a scare against Purdue last week, watching a 21-7 opening-quarter advantage disappear before pulling away for a 52-38 victory. Early in the second half, Anthony Woods broke a 16-yard run through the heart of the defense to give the Bruins the lead for good, and the team finished with 645 yards of offense.
Wayne Knight was the engine of that attack, rushing for 177 yards and reaching the end zone twice. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava completed 19 of 31 attempts for 276 yards and three touchdowns, while Semaj Morgan hauled in two of those scoring throws. Woods contributed 80 yards on 13 attempts.
Maryland, meanwhile, dropped a 35-26 decision to Virginia Tech at SECU Stadium after falling behind by as many as 21 points. The Terrapins had trouble ending drives, allowing the Hokies to convert 10 times on third down and twice on fourth down while Virginia Tech controlled possession for over 36 minutes.
Despite the loss, quarterback Malik Washington delivered a big statistical day, going 30-for-43 for 359 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Durr Jr. caught two of those scores and finished with 12 receptions for 109 yards.
The series between these programs has been limited but competitive, with UCLA holding a 2-1 edge. Last season's meeting, played at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 18, went to the Bruins by a 20-17 count.
Knight leads the UCLA ground game on the season with 345 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and the team averages 286.7 yards per game on the ground. Woods adds 228 yards and three scores. Through the air, Iamaleava has thrown for 611 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, with Morgan pacing the receivers on 12 catches for 168 yards and two scores.
For Maryland, Washington has been accurate and productive, connecting on 72.2 percent of his passes for 892 yards and six touchdowns. Durr is the leading receiving threat, with 28 catches for 256 yards and three trips into the end zone.
