Fourth-ranked Indiana opened Big Ten play with a 29-23 win over Northwestern on Friday night in Bloomington, improving to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The game stayed in doubt until the final minute, when the Hoosiers converted a key third down to run out the clock. Northwestern, now 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league, kept the pressure on throughout. The victory extended Indiana's winning streak to 20 games.
Quarterback Josh Hoover, a TCU transfer, continues to search for consistency in his new offense. He has shown chemistry at times with receivers Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh, but his comfort level has fluctuated from drive to drive. Head coach Curt Cignetti had previously pushed back on the level of criticism directed at Hoover after the Western Kentucky game.
Hoover's struggles have come alongside an uneven running game and an offensive line that has been more mistake-prone than expected through the first four weeks. The offensive balance the staff envisioned when bringing him in has yet to fully materialize.
The backfield depth is now a concern. Running back Khobie Martin went down in the season opener against North Texas and is expected back at midseason, though no target date has been confirmed. Turbo Richard, a Boston College transfer, was helped off the field in the first half Friday night, and Cignetti has not yet provided an update on his status. That leaves Lee Beebe Jr. as the featured back, with Sean Cuono potentially needing to take on a larger role.
Indiana's defense showed both promise and problems. The pass rush produced four sacks and seven tackles for loss, but Northwestern scored on its final four drives, including three touchdowns. Quarterback Aidan Chiles completed 22 of 29 passes for 293 yards and two scores, at one point leading three consecutive touchdown drives. The Hoosiers forced no turnovers and held Northwestern to only nine third-down situations.
Tight end also emerged as a trouble spot in the team's first real test of the season. Indiana entered the year young at the position, and it showed in missed assignments and pass-protection issues, though Andrew Barker and Trevor Gibbs delivered several important blocks. The young group is expected to develop with more playing time as the season progresses.
Friday's game served as a warning for a team with designs on contending in the Big Ten. Penalties, missed assignments and second-half defensive lapses are areas Indiana will need to address before the schedule toughens.
