Kentucky Defense Fuels 31-21 Road Upset of Texas A&M

The Wildcats held Texas A&M without a first down in the third quarter and got standout plays from several defenders in the road win.

Kentucky picked up a 31-21 road win over Texas A&M, with the defense setting the tone. The Wildcats did not allow the Aggies a first down at any point in the third quarter, a stretch that proved decisive in the game.

Sam Greene delivered two game-changing plays early. He went unblocked on a 4th-and-1 to stop Texas A&M for a turnover on downs, and he intercepted quarterback Marcel Reed while dropping into a curl-flat zone on a simulated-pressure look from defensive coordinator Jay Bateman. Both plays ended long Aggies drives.

Other defenders chipped in across the board. Jordan Castell led Kentucky with 13 tackles, broke up a pass and intercepted a poor throw from Reed to help seal the win. Lorenzo Cowan generated several quick wins against the Texas A&M offensive line on just 22 snaps, while Bo Barnes made sideline-to-sideline tackles on perimeter screens and overpowered 6-foot-7, 320-pound right tackle Wilkin Formby with a bull rush as a blitzer.

In the secondary, Hasaan Sykes broke up a pass with a sharp break on the ball and allowed only a couple of receptions. Paired with Terhyon Nichols, Sykes has given the Wildcats a physical corner duo through the early part of the season.
