ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Carolina's leading receiver is unlikely to play against Detroit because of a quad injury, thinning the Panthers' receiver group for Sunday night.
The Carolina Panthers appear likely to be without their most productive wide receiver when they face the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning, hours before kickoff, that Jalen Coker is unlikely to play because of a quad injury. Coker officially entered the weekend with a questionable tag, though Schefter's report suggests the Panthers are not counting on having him available.
Coker's week of practice reflected the uncertainty around his availability. He did not practice Wednesday, then returned on a limited basis Thursday and Friday. Carolina has not formally ruled him out, so his status will not be fully settled until the team releases its inactive list in the hours before the game.
Losing Coker would be a significant blow to a Carolina offense that has leaned on him early this season. Through three games, he leads the Panthers with 18 receptions for 222 yards and two touchdowns, and he has grown into one of quarterback Bryce Young's most reliable options in the passing game.
Coker was already managing an ankle problem when he sustained the quad injury in Carolina's Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns. He saw the field for just 36.4 percent of the offensive snaps that day before exiting, finishing with two receptions totaling 18 yards.
His likely absence would compound a shortage at wide receiver for a Carolina team whose injury list has kept growing. Xavier Legette is already on injured reserve with a knee injury, which guarantees he will miss Sunday night's matchup with Detroit. The Panthers elevated wide receiver Ja'seem Reed from the practice squad, giving them another option if Coker cannot play.
Should Coker sit out, Young would still have Tetairoa McMillan, John Metchie III and Brycen Tremayne at wide receiver, along with the team's tight ends. Even so, losing the player who leads the team in receptions and receiving yards would force Carolina to reshape its passing attack against Detroit.
Detroit's defense has had trouble slowing opposing passing games this season, giving up 299.3 passing yards per game through the first three weeks, and the Lions' secondary has been managing injuries of its own. A Coker absence would remove the Panthers' leading receiver from that matchup.
Carolina is dealing with personnel losses on the defensive side as well. Starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson Jr. were both placed on injured reserve, meaning neither will be available to match up with quarterback Jared Goff and the Detroit offense. The absences leave the Panthers short-handed in the secondary heading into Sunday night.
The Detroit Lions visit the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 4, at Bank of America Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. EDT, and the game airs on NBC.
