The fan seen carrying food and a baby at Oracle Park says her husband had offered to help and was grieving a friend that night.
A fan shown on the broadcast during Tuesday's San Francisco Giants game at Oracle Park has publicly responded to the wave of commentary the moment set off. Writing on Substack under the name Erika, she said the short clip led strangers to draw conclusions about her marriage that she says are wrong. The San Francisco Chronicle noted it could not independently verify the writer's identity.
The footage, which drew hundreds of thousands of views, captured a woman in a Giants jersey walking down the stadium steps with several food containers in hand and a baby carried against her chest. The man beside her, widely assumed to be her husband, started eating before she had fully sat down. Broadcasters Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper kept the cameras on the pair, with Krukow calling her the true picture of a multitasking mother and an Olympic champion, and the two went on to label her mom of the year.
That label spread quickly across Instagram, X and TikTok, where commenters echoed the announcers and mocked the father for failing to assist. According to Erika, the tone of the online reaction eventually shifted into what she described as deeply disturbing messages, with some urging her to divorce her husband.
In her essay, which had drawn more than 6,000 likes and 600 comments by Saturday afternoon, Erika recounted the evening in detail. She said she had left her seat around the fifth inning for a restroom trip, and that her husband, Ramses, had volunteered to hold the baby. She declined because the child, whom she called her hot pocket, kept her warm on a cold San Francisco night. She then picked up trays of brisket sandwiches and loaded fries on the return, and said Ramses moved her jacket so she could sit, offered to take the containers from her lap, and proposed sharing his sandwich and feeding her before eating anything himself.
Erika also explained that the outing carried emotional weight beyond a ballpark snack run. She said Ramses had recently lost a childhood friend who had been a gifted baseball player, and that she suggested attending a Giants game in his memory. Letting him relax at the ballpark, she wrote, was how she cared for him while he grieved. The camera, she noted, showed what she was holding but not what he was carrying that night.
Addressing the critics directly, Erika asked people who insulted Ramses to consider that their children might one day see those words or videos, and said she did not want strangers' descriptions of their father as a deadbeat to be what they find. Many Substack commenters praised her account, with some describing it as required reading about the risks of assuming knowledge of other people's lives. Erika closed by saying she could only be mom of the year with the dad sitting beside her, and expressed hope that the episode would make people more willing to admit when they do not know the whole story.
The Giants continue their homestand with a National League West matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, September 27 at Oracle Park. First pitch is set for 3:05 PM EDT, with the game available on MLB.TV, NBC Sports BA and SportsNet LA.
