Sirianni credits Hurts' growth, not just new offense, for throws over middle

The Eagles coach says his quarterback's experience and preparation explain his deeper reads and backside throws two weeks into the season.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed reporters on Monday about Jalen Hurts targeting the middle of the field more often this season. He said his quarterback has handled early-season challenges well, connecting on more backside routes and traveling further into his progressions.

Asked to explain the shift, Sirianni pointed first to Hurts' drive for self-improvement. Despite a résumé that includes plenty of wins and production, the quarterback keeps asking how he can raise the team's chances, which the coach said reflects his preparation and constant search to improve.

Sirianni also tied the development to experience rather than scheme alone. As quarterbacks face more defensive looks over the years, he explained, they learn to identify when a front-side route won't work and to shift their eyes and work back across the formation. He described Hurts, now in his sixth season as an NFL starter, as diligent in building those reps.

The question of how much credit belongs to the offense now run under Sean Mannion drew a balanced answer. Sirianni noted that some backside concepts are fresh while others carry over from before, so the system plays a role without accounting for everything.

The takeaway for Philadelphia is that the improvement may not require a reinvention. Recognizing what defenses concede, trusting those reads, and progressing past a covered first option are incremental skills that can meaningfully affect offensive consistency, and the Eagles believe they are watching exactly that take shape.
