North Korea's Ri Song Gum delivered the standout performance of the weightlifting platform in Nagoya on Wednesday, taking gold in the women's 49kg class with three world records. It was her country's first gold medal of the Asian Games.
Ri opened with a 94kg snatch, edging past the previous world mark of 93kg. She then raised the clean and jerk standard twice, lifting 116kg and later 121kg against the old mark of 115kg. Her 215kg total beat the existing world record by seven kilograms.
The victory made Ri only the fourth weightlifter, and the first woman, to win three Asian Games gold medals, following previous triumphs in Jakarta and Hangzhou. She joins Iran's Mohammad Nassiri, South Korea's Kim Tae-hyun, and Iran's Behdad Salimi in that group; no lifter has ever won four.
India's Mirabai Chanu, silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, earned her first Asian Games medal on her third attempt with a 198kg total built on an 87kg snatch and 111kg clean and jerk. Indonesia's Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze at 191kg after lifts of 88kg and 103kg.
