Pirates designate Camilo Doval for assignment after deadline deal

Pittsburgh cut ties with the reliever it acquired from the Yankees in July, activating Kirby Yates from the injured list in a corresponding move.

The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-handed reliever Camilo Doval for assignment on Tuesday, parting ways with one of the pitchers they added at the trade deadline. The move coincided with Kirby Yates being activated from the 15-day injured list.

Doval, 28th-round... Doval came over from the New York Yankees on July 28 in exchange for Double-A catcher/first baseman Omar Alfonzo, who ranked 28th in New York's farm system according to MLB Pipeline. The right-hander appeared in 20 games for Pittsburgh, throwing 19 innings with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. He struck out 23 batters while issuing 13 walks.

Control problems that had followed him during his time in New York persisted in Pittsburgh. Doval still has one year of club control remaining, which made the decision to move on somewhat unexpected with the season's final week underway.

Doval was an All-Star closer at his peak, leading the National League with 39 saves for the San Francisco Giants in 2023, but he has not recaptured that form since. The Pirates open their final home series of the year Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m. ET against the St. Louis Cardinals.
