No. 7 Alabama beat No. 16 Mississippi State 56-23 on Saturday afternoon in Starkville, winning a Top 25 Southeastern Conference road matchup behind big plays on offense and defense. The victory kept the Crimson Tide unbeaten at 5-0, their best start to a season since 2022, per PFF College.
The result also extended one of the longest head-to-head runs in the league. Saturday was Alabama's 17th consecutive win over the Bulldogs, a streak the SEC Network highlighted in its postgame coverage.
Quarterback Keelon Russell again led the offense. PFF College charted him at 16 of 22 passing for 285 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the Week 5 game, and he added a fourth touchdown as a runner.
The scoring total came with a historical footnote. ESPN Insights noted during the game that the 56 points were the most Alabama has scored in a road game against a ranked opponent in school history.
The afternoon also stretched a season-long run of offensive production. Alabama has scored at least 45 points in every one of its five games, which Cole Cubelic identified as the second-longest streak to open a season in program history, behind a six-game run in 2018. College Football Nerds added that no team had opened a season with five straight 45-point games since Oklahoma in 2019, when Jalen Hurts played quarterback for the Sooners.
Much of that production has come on the ground. According to Cubelic, Alabama already has 17 rushing touchdowns in five games this season after recording 21 in 15 games a year ago, and its nine rushing scores through three SEC games already exceed the eight it managed in eight conference games last season.
Alabama also won the exchanges at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The defense held Mississippi State to 18 rushing yards, intercepted Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor twice — with one of the picks returned for a touchdown — and forced two fumbles in a dominant showing.
The fast start has invited comparisons to the program's most decorated era. Brett McMurphy noted that coach Kalen DeBoer is now 25-8 through 33 games at Alabama, the same record Nick Saban held at the same point of his tenure with the Crimson Tide.
Reaction across social media centered on Russell and Alabama's place in the broader race. David Pollack wrote that Russell has already surpassed what Ty Simpson did a season ago, before Simpson became the 13th pick in the draft, and that the Tide again present problems for any opponent. Ari Wasserman wrote that the program has returned to the top of the sport, while the SEC's official account and ESPN's College GameDay also marked the win.
