Penalties, stalled quarterback play and a 39-yard rushing day sank the Hawkeyes, who now face a short week and a quarterback decision before Friday's game against Washington.
Ohio State controlled every phase of the game and beat Iowa 31-14 on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, souring a day that had begun with ESPN's "College GameDay" on campus and momentum from the Hawkeyes' win over Michigan the previous week. Kirk Ferentz's team failed to execute from its first possession, and the performance left major questions about where the 2026 Hawkeyes stand.
The opening drive set the tone. A false start pushed Iowa from second-and-2 back to second-and-7, and Hank Brown was sacked and stripped on the very next snap. Ohio State needed only two plays after the turnover to reach the end zone.
The mistakes kept coming. Trailing 10-6 in the first half, Iowa converted a third-and-7 near midfield on a completion from Brown to DJ Vonnahme, but an illegal formation penalty wiped out the gain. An incompletion and a punt followed, and the Buckeyes then drove for a touchdown just before halftime. Beating a ranked opponent requires a clean game, and Iowa did not deliver one.
Brown never found a rhythm. A week after coming through in the fourth quarter against Michigan, he completed 12 of 27 passes for 132 yards with an interception, missed several chances at big plays down the field and lost the fumble on the strip-sack. Backup Jeremy Hecklinski entered and went 5-for-5 for 67 yards while directing Iowa's only touchdown drive, which sets up another quarterback decision for the week ahead.
The running game remained a serious issue against strong opposition. After running effectively against Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa earlier this season, the Hawkeyes managed just 39 rushing yards at 1.9 per carry against the Buckeyes. That followed 93 yards at 3.2 per carry against Iowa State and 58 at 2.4 against Michigan, leaving the offense one-dimensional whenever the competition level rises.
Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith was unstoppable, finishing with 11 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns no matter how Iowa tried to defend him. It was the second consecutive week the Hawkeye secondary was beaten for big production, after Michigan's receivers found success the week before. Injuries played a part, but the stretch raises fresh concerns for Phil Parker's defense on the back end.
Those injuries are stacking up. Iowa played without safety Tyler Brown, then lost defensive back Zach Lutmer during the game. Deshaun Lee exited briefly, and defensive lineman Bryce Hawthorne ran off holding his shoulder in the second half. Lutmer is a key piece of the secondary, and any extended absence would strain a pass defense that has struggled in recent weeks.
The schedule leaves little recovery time. Iowa faces Washington on Friday, and the short week arrives with an unsettled quarterback situation and a growing injury list. Even so, the earlier win over Michigan means this single defeat has not cost the Hawkeyes control of their own path this season.
