No. 17 Iowa remained undefeated on Saturday, escaping Ann Arbor with a 20-19 victory over No. 18 Michigan after Hank Brown hit Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown as the clock hit zero. The Hawkeyes moved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play, while the Wolverines slipped to 3-1 and 0-1 in the conference. The result also marked Iowa's first road win over a ranked Big Ten opponent since a 2015 victory at Northwestern.
Brown's afternoon began slowly. Iowa managed only 77 total yards in the first half, and through three quarters the quarterback had completed 8 of 16 throws for 85 yards while the offense converted just 2 of 8 third downs. He caught fire in the final period, going 13 of 19 for 142 yards and two touchdowns, with the Hawkeyes converting 4 of 6 third downs. Brown ended the game 21 of 35 for 227 yards and two scores.
Vander Zee, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound receiver from Rock Rapids, Iowa, delivered the winning catch with a toe-drag in the corner. As a freshman in his 2024 debut he had announced himself with two touchdowns and 66 yards on five receptions, though injuries later slowed his development. Against Michigan he again finished with five catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns, including the decisive grab as time ran out.
Iowa's special teams provided a critical lift. After Michigan opened the scoring on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan, Braeden Jackson answered with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Jackson has been increasingly influential for the 2026 Hawkeyes, having rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns the previous week in a 55-0 shutout of Northern Iowa.
The Hawkeye defense gave up 429 yards and had a rough day overall. Underwood completed 17 of 28 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, including a 49-yard scoring connection with Buchanan for the receiver's second of the game. Still, Iowa came through when it mattered: Deshaun Lee intercepted his former high school teammate Underwood to erase potential Michigan points, the defense added a key fourth-down stop before that pick, forced two other Wolverine drives to settle for field goals, and made two more crucial stops late to set up the winning drive.
Iowa's ground game remains a concern against strong opposition. The Hawkeyes managed just 93 rushing yards, 3.2 per carry, in their 16-13 win over Iowa State and only 58 yards, 2.4 per attempt, against Michigan. Improving that figure figures to be a priority going forward.
The game also carried historical weight. In 11 previous meetings between the schools when both were opening Big Ten play, Michigan had won all 11; Iowa broke that streak in dramatic fashion. It was the third win at Michigan for head coach Kirk Ferentz, and Iowa improved to 5-4-1 at Michigan Stadium in games in which both teams entered ranked in the AP poll.
