Wales Captains Lake and Morgan Set for Gloucester Debut Against Exeter

Hooker Dewi Lake will captain Gloucester with Jac Morgan as a deputy as the former Ospreys pair prepare for their first Premiership appearance.

Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan, two recent Wales captains, are preparing for their Premiership Rugby debuts with Gloucester against Exeter on Saturday. The pair announced in December 2025 that they would leave Ospreys for Kingsholm ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Lake, a 27-year-old hooker, has been named Gloucester captain, with flanker Morgan, 26, serving as one of his deputies. The two have been close friends for roughly a decade and were co-captains of Wales at the 2023 World Cup under Warren Gatland.

Both players said they did not consult each other before signing, but each was pleased they ended up at the same club. "I am incredibly happy we got to land at the same club together," Lake said, adding that they agreed to meet in the car park on their first day so neither would walk in alone.

They have settled into a squad that already includes Welsh players Max Llewellyn, Freddie Thomas, Josh Hathaway and Deian Gwynne. Morgan said several of them speak Welsh with each other around the training ground, sometimes having to remind themselves to switch to English in group settings.

Lake said he moved to test himself in a new league, while Morgan pointed to Gloucester's rugby tradition and support in the city, noting Welsh former players such as Tomos Williams, James Hook and Richard Hibbard as part of the club's history.
