Two years after drafting him No. 1 overall, Atlanta trades Zaccharie Risacher to Dallas, where Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving hold the spotlight.
The Dallas Mavericks acquired wing Zaccharie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team trade, ending the Frenchman's stay with the club that made him the No. 1 overall pick in 2024. Risacher, now 21, appeared at Dallas media day on Sept. 25 at American Airlines Center, his first formal outing since the deal. His two seasons in Atlanta were shaped less by his production than by the expectations attached to his draft position.
The numbers from his rookie year were solid. Risacher started 73 games, averaged 12.6 points and 3.6 rebounds, and finished second to Stephon Castle in Rookie of the Year voting while collecting five first-place votes. By most measures it was a productive debut rather than an immediate leap to stardom, but the Hawks and their supporters wanted a faster rise.
The bar he faced was unusually high. All four players taken No. 1 overall immediately before Risacher went on to reach an All-Star Game, and three of them added All-NBA honors. A report in The Smoking Cuban described a fan base that expected him to mirror the early success of Victor Wembanyama and Paolo Banchero while carrying the label of top pick in a 2024 class regarded as historically weak.
Atlanta's tolerance expired in April. The Hawks pulled Risacher from the full-time starting lineup and left him on the bench for multiple playoff games, a steep drop barely a year after his runner-up rookie finish. After just two seasons, the franchise moved on from the player it had chosen first overall.
The three-team agreement brought Lu Dort from the Oklahoma City Thunder to Atlanta, while Dallas sent out guard Ryan Nembhard and a second-round selection to land Risacher. The modest cost reflected the gap between the two organizations' assessments of him, a price Atlanta accepted for a player in whom Dallas still saw considerable value.
His responsibilities change in Texas. Per The Smoking Cuban, the Mavericks are not asking Risacher to become a star on arrival, which lets him progress at his own pace. With Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving drawing most of the attention, the young wing can work on his game as one part of a larger roster rather than its centerpiece.
Risacher has embraced the change. He valued the belief Dallas showed by trading for him and welcomed the chance to hold a regular starting role again alongside Irving and Flagg. His positioning on the wing is seen as a promising fit within a roster built for long-term growth rather than a single-season push.
The move also removes the comparisons that followed him nightly in Atlanta, where recent top picks had quickly become recurring All-NBA performers. Still only 21, Risacher now has the opening to rebuild his momentum and establish himself as a quality full-time starter, provided he stays healthy and settles into the role.
