The Chicago White Sox took Game 1 of their American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, winning 3-0 on the road Saturday.
Cleveland repeatedly put itself in position to score and repeatedly came away empty. The Guardians filled the bases in two separate innings, left seven runners stranded overall and closed the game with three hits. Not one of those threats produced a run.
Run prevention was not the reason the home team lost. Starter Parker Messick was charged with two runs over 4 1/3 innings, and the relievers behind him conceded only one. The shortfall came almost entirely at the plate.
Chicago's staff, meanwhile, needed no conventional starter at all. The White Sox turned the game over to their relievers from the outset, and five of them pieced together the shutout. Even Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt had generous words for how Chicago's pitchers executed.
Jose Ramirez has not looked the same since a wrist injury cost him time this season, and the opener fit that pattern. He drew one walk but finished 0-for-3 with a strikeout. Batting him lower in the order is viewed as unrealistic for Vogt given Ramirez's stature in the organization, yet Cleveland is chasing its first World Series title since 1948, and at his best he remains the club's finest player. The coverage noted his plate appearances have lost the edge that once made opposing pitchers wary.
For Jo Adell, the first postseason appearance of his career following his tenure with the Los Angeles Angels was a rough one. Serving as the designated hitter in the cleanup spot, he went 0-for-4 and struck out each time up. The report speculated that the DH role, which left him in the dugout between at-bats rather than occupied in the outfield, might have contributed. Whatever the cause, four strikeouts from the cleanup spot are hard to overcome.
Chase DeLauter built a standout rookie season in 2026 after an introduction that was anything but gentle: his major-league debut came during the 2025 playoffs, when he went 1-for-6 and dropped a fly ball in the outfield. Batting third on Saturday, he made contact in all four trips and never struck out, but had no hits to show for it. His hardest contact came with two outs and the bases filled in the third inning, a line drive that traveled directly to the left fielder and ended the inning.
With the lineup managing so little, responsibility for the defeat was spread widely, though the hitless nights from Ramirez, Adell and DeLauter drew the most attention. Cleveland now trails in the series heading into its next opportunity on Monday.
The White Sox and Guardians meet again Monday, October 5, at Progressive Field in Cleveland. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM EDT, with coverage on TBS and truTV.
