Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was back at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, two days after a foul ball struck him near the left eye in Cincinnati, and manager Craig Counsell indicated the veteran is not ruling out a quick return.
"I think Alex is going to be fine," Counsell told reporters. "He's planning on playing."
Bregman was injured Sunday at Great American Ball Park when a Michael Busch foul ball bounced and hit him as he stood in the on-deck circle. He ran straight to the visiting clubhouse, and a later social media post showed significant damage to his face.
The club did not place Bregman on the injured list. Counsell said the third baseman did a light workout Tuesday and tracked pitches on the team's Trajekt pitching machine, which simulates opposing pitchers' deliveries.
The Cubs hope Bregman can appear in this weekend's regular-season finale series in Boston and potentially in the opening round of the playoffs. The National League wild-card series is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 29, with Chicago likely to host Philadelphia in a best-of-three.
