Marlins Break Through in 12th to Delay Cubs' Playoff Clinch

Miami scored six runs in the 12th inning to beat Chicago 8-2 on Tuesday, keeping the Cubs from securing an NL wild-card spot.

Griffin Conine delivered a tiebreaking single that scored Esteury Ruiz as part of a six-run 12th inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. The loss kept Chicago from clinching a National League playoff berth.

Jakob Marsee and Joe Mack added run-scoring hits in the extra-inning rally, with Mack delivering a two-run single. Kyle Stowers homered and doubled earlier for Miami, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Josh Ekness earned the win with a scoreless inning.

The Cubs could have locked up a playoff spot with a win or an Arizona loss, but the Diamondbacks beat Colorado 7-2. Chicago entered Tuesday even with San Diego atop the wild-card standings, with Philadelphia one game back. The Phillies beat Milwaukee 6-4, while the Padres played later at the Dodgers.

Chicago nearly won it in the 10th after loading the bases with two outs, but second baseman Javier Sanoja made a sliding stop on Pedro Ramírez's grounder to rob the Cubs of a walk-off single. The Cubs played without third baseman Alex Bregman, who is recovering from facial fractures after being struck by a foul ball.

Miami led early on Agustín Ramírez's RBI single in the fourth, and Stowers homered in the sixth. Chicago tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a run that scored after an error at the plate and Ian Happ's RBI single off Calvin Faucher.

The teams meet again Wednesday night, with Ryan Gusto (1-5, 4.14 ERA) starting for Miami against Kevin Gausman (9-12, 4.55) for Chicago.
