The San Francisco Giants have brought back right-handed reliever Camilo Doval. The move, announced Thursday, came after the Pittsburgh Pirates recently designated the 29-year-old for assignment.
Doval takes the roster spot of fellow righty Blake Tidwell, whom the Giants transferred to the 60-day injured list. The addition comes in the closing days of the regular season, giving San Francisco another arm in the bullpen mix.
Doval is a familiar face in San Francisco. He spent parts of his first five big-league seasons with the Giants before being traded to the New York Yankees at midseason last year.
His best season came in 2023, when he was an All-Star and led the National League with 39 saves. That year he posted a 2.93 ERA with 87 strikeouts over 67.2 innings.
Since then, his performance has declined. The Yankees removed him from high-leverage duties earlier this season before trading him to the Pirates at the deadline. In 20 appearances with Pittsburgh, he recorded a 3.79 ERA but walked nearly 16 percent of the batters he faced.
For the Giants, the reunion is a low-cost look at a pitcher they know well. If the front office likes what it sees down the stretch, the club can tender Doval a contract for the 2027 season.
