Mystics Top Sun 79-69 to Set Single-Season Franchise Wins Record

Shakira Austin posted 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Washington Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun 79-69 on Tuesday night, securing the 27th win of a season for the first time in franchise history. The previous record of 26 victories was set in 2019, the year Washington won its lone WNBA championship.

The Mystics (27-16) pushed their advantage into double digits with a 15-4 run late in the third quarter, and Cotie McMahon's three-pointer roughly 90 seconds later extended the margin to 66-53. McMahon finished with 13 points, while Sonia Citron added 12.

Austin went 11-for-11 at the free-throw line, a career high in makes, and recorded her 20th double-double of the year while extending her single-season franchise record to 397 rebounds. She and Kiki Iriafen, who has 22 double-doubles, became the first pair of WNBA teammates to each reach 20 double-doubles in the same season.

Diamond Miller paced Connecticut (10-33) with 19 points, and Leila Lacan and Raegan Beers chipped in 11 apiece. Despite outrebounding Washington 43-34, the Sun could not close the gap.

The Mystics now lead Dallas and New York, who are tied for seventh, by one game with two days left in the regular season. Washington hosts Chicago on Thursday, while Connecticut welcomes Toronto the same night in both teams' season finale.
