US Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker says he told every player he left off his team to go prove him wrong, responding to J.J. Spaun's comments about the brief phone call informing him of his omission.
Spaun's exclusion had appeared injury-related after he withdrew from the Tour Championship, but the 2025 US Open champion showed he was fit by winning the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour at Wentworth. Spaun said his call with Snedeker lasted about 45 seconds and that he believed he had earned a spot.
Speaking to media ahead of this week's matches, Snedeker praised Spaun's win and said tough decisions were unavoidable with 15 or 16 players under consideration. He said he trusted his gut and feels awful for Spaun, whom he described as a great competitor.
Snedeker added that he expects Ryan Gerard, Gary Woodland, Akshay Bhatia and other players near the cut to play well, and would be shocked if Spaun is not on the US team in Ireland next time.
Snedeker also addressed course setup at Medinah, saying his plans had not gone according to plan due to weather and other factors, and that he wants his players focused on competing regardless of conditions.
