The world No. 1 said rumors about American dysfunction after Ryder Cup losses have frustrated him and his teammates ahead of the Presidents Cup at Medinah.
Scottie Scheffler said Tuesday that recurring storylines about discord on the U.S. Ryder Cup team have been a source of frustration for American players. Speaking at Medinah Country Club ahead of the Presidents Cup, he pointed to reports such as Patrick Cantlay not wearing his hat at the 2023 Ryder Cup and claims that the U.S. squad met in a separate team room and was not a close group.
"It's very much untrue," Scheffler said of those narratives, which surfaced during or after U.S. losses at Marco Simone in 2023 and Bethpage Black last year.
The world No. 1 has been far less dominant in team events than in stroke play. He is 3-5-1 across two prior Presidents Cups and 3-6-3 at the Ryder Cup, including an 0-4-0 mark in foursomes.
U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker described finding Scheffler a steady partner as a "challenge," noting partners may feel they are letting down the game's best player. Scheffler has had seven different partners in team events since 2023.
Scheffler said match play carries some flukiness and that second-guessing after the fact is easy, adding that he always feels he can play better.
