The Atlanta Braves reinstated right-handed reliever Robert Suarez from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday, returning him to the active roster with five games left in the regular season. Suarez finished a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett and is set to rejoin the big-league bullpen for the postseason. In a corresponding move, right-hander Owen Murphy was optioned to Gwinnett.
Suarez had been out since June with right elbow inflammation. Before the injury, he was one of the National League's most effective relievers, posting a 0.56 ERA and 0.84 WHIP with four saves across 31 appearances. He threw a scoreless rehab outing for Gwinnett on September 20, giving up one hit and striking out one.
His return gives manager Walt Weiss another high-leverage option alongside closer Raisel Iglesias and Dylan Lee heading into October. Suarez signed a three-year, $45 million contract last December and is a two-time All-Star whose fastball regularly reaches the upper 90s.
Murphy, 22, made his major league debut earlier this season and threw four innings for Atlanta, recording a 5.00 ERA with eight strikeouts. He will continue developing at Gwinnett and remains organizational depth.
