Stian Bendvold scored two goals to lead College of Charleston to a 2-1 road win over No. 1 South Carolina on Tuesday night in Columbia, S.C. The victory marks the first time the Cougars men's soccer program has beaten the nation's top-ranked team.
Bendvold opened the scoring in the 28th minute, finishing a pass from Matt Lenert through the Gamecock defense with a shot from the right side of the box into the left side of the goal. South Carolina equalized with 21 seconds left in the first half.
The junior forward delivered the winner in the 85th minute as Charleston kept pressure on the Gamecock backline. Goalkeeper Martin Brink recorded two saves in the win.
The result moves Charleston to 5-1-2 on the season and gives South Carolina (7-1-0) its first non-victory of the year. The Cougars are now 4-1 over their last five matches against ranked opponents, having beaten ranked teams in each of the past three seasons, including No. 18 Hofstra in 2024 and both No. 15 North Carolina and No. 15 Furman in 2025.
