Bregman Avoids Injured List After Foul Ball Strikes Him in Face

The Cubs third baseman sustained multiple facial fractures Sunday but could be back on the field before the regular season ends.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman will not be placed on the Injured List after being struck in the face by a foul ball during Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday. Counsell indicated a return as early as this weekend is possible, before the regular season wraps up. "I think Alex is going to be fine," Counsell said, via ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "He's planning on playing."

The injury occurred while Bregman stood in the on-deck circle in the fourth inning. First baseman Michael Busch fouled off a pitch that struck Bregman in the face, and Bregman left the game, bleeding, after dropping his bat and helmet. Matt Shaw pinch hit in his place.

Bregman was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures but did not require surgery. He posted graphic photos of his injuries on social media after the game, and his condition appeared improved when he arrived at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

On the season, the 32-year-old is batting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBI, including an RBI single earlier in Sunday's win over the Reds.

Chicago, at 87-69, opens its final home series of the regular season Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. The Milwaukee Brewers have clinched the NL Central, but the Cubs need one more win to secure a second consecutive playoff berth.
