The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox will close out their three-game series at a new location. The finale, originally set for Fenway Park in Boston, has been moved to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, because of inclement weather.
The relocation was reported by Chicago Tribune beat writer Meghan Montemurro. According to her post on X, the game will be played Sunday at 3:05 p.m., and the Cubs planned to depart for the Tampa area Friday night after the second game of a doubleheader.
Tropicana Field is the home ballpark of the Tampa Bay Rays, making it an unusual neutral-site setting for a game between two clubs based in the Midwest and New England. The series had been scheduled to run Friday through Sunday at Fenway Park before the weather forced the schedule change.
Rather than playing the three games across the weekend, the Cubs and Red Sox played a doubleheader at Fenway Park on Friday. Boston took the opener 4-3, and Game 2 had just gotten underway when the club announced the finale would be shifted to Florida.
For fans holding tickets to the relocated game, the Red Sox laid out the refund process. According to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, the team said tickets purchased directly from the Red Sox will be automatically refunded to the original payment method, with refunds completed within seven days. Those tickets will carry no cash value.
The venue change is one of the more unusual logistical twists of the season, sending both teams to an indoor ballpark in Florida for the back end of a series that began at one of baseball's most historic venues. The move to Tropicana Field removes any weather risk for the finale.
The weekend series has also carried extra storylines beyond the standings. Alex Bregman returned to Fenway Park for the first time since signing with the Cubs in January of 2026, walking the field before Friday's game against his former club.
Following Sunday's finale in St. Petersburg, the Cubs and Red Sox are scheduled to meet Saturday, September 26 at 7:15 PM EDT at Fenway Park. That game airs on MLB.TV, Marquee Sports Network, and NESN.
