Diamondbacks Down Rockies 7-2 as Colorado Reaches 100 Losses

Kyle Freeland was chased after three innings in what may have been his final home start for the Rockies, who fell 7-2 to Arizona on Monday at Coors Field.

The Colorado Rockies dropped their 100th game of the season Monday, falling 7-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field. Kyle Freeland, potentially making his last home start in a Rockies uniform, lasted only three innings and was charged with five earned runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out two over 69 pitches.

Arizona struck early against the left-hander. Ildemaro Vargas opened the game with a single and scored on a Gabriel Moreno double, and Geraldo Perdomo's single made it 2-0. Tim Tawa's ground-rule double in the third brought home Nolan Arenado, who had doubled, and a Vargas single plus a Zac Veen error ended Freeland's night in the fourth. Arenado later added a 421-foot solo homer in the seventh and finished a triple short of the cycle.

Colorado's offense managed only eight baserunners all night — three hits, two errors, two hit batters and a walk. Both runs came in the third on back-to-back hits: Mickey Moniak's solo homer to right-center and Connor Norby's sacrifice fly that followed a Troy Johnston double. Jake McCarthy's 22-game on-base streak ended on a strikeout, and TJ Rumfield's 24-game streak — the longest active run in the majors — ended with a flyout in the ninth.

After the game, manager Warren Schaeffer said Freeland fell behind in counts and wasn't as sharp in the zone, while praising what the pitcher has meant to the organization. Freeland called it an emotional day and said he was proud to be a Colorado Rockie. The two teams meet again Tuesday, with Mason Adams (0-1, 5.09 ERA) scheduled to face Merrill Kelly (9-14, 5.00 ERA) at 6:40 p.m.
